Dealing with Failure: Alone on Everest

Introduction
Hiding in our life’s numerous failure moments are a select few shiny little success stories. This story is one that highlights the overwhelming accomplishment in a situation that was a complete failure. Interestingly, I only realize the accomplishments much later and only after they are pointed out to me.

On 3 April 2014, I flew from Ottawa to Kathmandu in a bid to climb on the world’s tallest mountain. Everest (highest at 8,848m) and Lhotse (4th highest at 8,516m) are essentially “joined at the hip” and share all camps from base camp to camp 3, while each of their camp 4s above the death zone are about 50m apart.
